The Dangers of Cyber-space

28 December 2010

Do we really maintain control over technology or is technology slowly taking control over us? Reviewing the multimedia (inclusive of TV, Internet, cell phones etc) – slowly but surely we are being homogenized into a cyber-medium of reality. We are losing our connection to each other and to the extended natural environment – we are interacting with both at an arms distance. The optimal substrate for consciousness expansion as regards Mankind is first hand interaction with the natural environment and with each other. Generations emerging from a predominant cyber-environment may well be characterized by:

a. Sensory deprivation and emotional stunting. In this situation, personal gratification would be limited to numbers of cyber-friends acknowledging their existence.

b. Creativity limited to the substrate of cyberspace with less and less natural or real ingredients

Mankind’s existence is driven by the following identifiable factors:

1. Persistent movement towards gratification and away from anxiety-provoking

situations (sensory based and includes Maslow’s survival needs)

2. Self-interest obsession reflecting fear and manifesting as greed and the need

to take control (power monger)

3. Creating and pro-creating – art forms (includes science and technology) and

offspring

4. Expansion of consciousness into universal nonlocality (quantum) realms.

When we review points ‘a’ and ‘b’ and ‘1’ to ‘4’ in the context of a cyber-space environment, there are some concerns:

With an inadequate foundation for triangles building (see Triangles Model) there cannot be adequate integration. Without adequate integration there is stunted evolution of consciousness which would give rise to cyber-homogenized zombies with infantile emotions (untested and unhoned through non-self-actualization in a setting devoid of natural interaction).

Left to his own devices, Mankind will default to the syndrome of laziness-greed-fear. While this has spurred technological development when Mankind has been anchored to the natural environment (Ian Morris), shifting into a predominant cyber-space environment would have dire consequences – leading inevitably to a downward spiral of existence. Therefore to achieve a win-win situation we would need to mediate and regulate Mankind’s default tendency through law or through positive/negative incentives.

There is a serious danger to our further evolution and survival if we continue to reflexly follow the drive originating from the laziness-greed-fear default, in a predominant cyber-space environment.
